Paris and Britney and J.Lo, OH MY!
Andy Warhol said that everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame. Well if he is right then it looks like everyone will have their own perfume too!
It seems that any quasi-celebrity with a remotely marketable name has their own fragrance. This trend only got worse in 2007 with perfume launches for Derek Jeter, David Beckham, Kylie Minogue, Gwen Stefani and on and on and on.
Now just because a perfume may be named after a celebrity does not mean that the scent was in any way designed or approved by said superstar. Truth is they are just getting a big fat check for the rights to use their names, likeness, etc… It’s a safe assumption that Britney Spears knows as much about designing fragrances as she does about parenting and wearing undergarments. Actually, her perfumes are designed and distributed by the folks over at Elizabeth Arden. They actually did a pretty good job as Spears’ perfumes are pretty nice smelling. We just hope that wearing them doesn’t carry any side effects like forgetting to put babies in seat belts.
The sad truth is that the use of a celebrity name can often yield quick sales for the perfume companies. It is much easier for them to pay a couple of millions to use someones name then to try and launch a fragrance brand from scratch with no recognizable brand. However, we feel that this trend has reached its peak. Hopefully, 2008 will usher (no pun intended since the singer Usher has a cologe named after him too) in a return to the days of perfume design as an art form and not an open bar of C List famous folk with no knowledge of fragrances.
